Susan Lenart Kazmer describes her distinctive style as transforming the ordinary. “Combining these energies in recycled objects is indeed creating a contemporary talisman. Consider the mental power put into a pencil stub worn down by an accountant during tax season, or the mundane repetition locked into a key from an old factory locker, or the freedom embedded in the bones of a free-range chicken. I believe these energies lend power and mystery to ordinary objects. In my work I use them to create talismans worn for protection, freedom, and strength.”

Shana Astrachan continues our exploration of artists utilizing ‘repurposed’ materials. “Besides her love for metal, Astrachan loves experimenting with all sorts of materials. When asked what three materials she couldn’t live without, she sighs and says “I feel like there are a million.” Being open with new materials is what draws the artists to her unique designs. The jewelry maker adds that she loves the flexibility of mohair silk and the playfulness/fun of sequins.” Scroll through her site for jewelry made from sequins, felt, bottle caps, bag clips…the options are endless!!!

Holly Stein’s work will make you say…WOW…from the home page to the variety of items featured in her Design Lines photos. “I challenge myself to create works that are conceptual in nature and stretch the limitations of my own ability as well as others’ preconceptions about art. I like incorporating common and recylced materials — altering purpose and usefulness and elevating what is perceived as refuse into, what I hope is, art. Many of my pieces employ unexpected twists — an unusual finished back, hidden talismanic words or jewelry as a decorative element on a completely functional box. I strive to make a connection with the viewer and wearer that makes the work exciting and original and can be enjoyed for it’s beauty and quality.”
