Last week, the Weather Channel featured the winners of the University of Miami’s underwater photo contest. Of course, I immediately sent the link to Melanie West, who moves the beauty of underwater life to the surface with her Bio Bangle Series.
“Each spring, the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science hosts an underwater photography contest open to amateur photographers who earn no more than 20 percent of their income from photography.”

If yesterday’s post had Melaine West’s name written all over it…then today’s post belongs to Carol Simmons. The Brewster Kaleidoscope Society is an international organization of kaleidoscope enthusiasts. “Named after the inventor of the kaleidoscope, Sir David Brewster, its purpose is to share and promote the beauty, creativity, and joy of these mirrored tubes of magic.”

Each year Olympus America sponsors a photo competition that honors the world’s most extraordinary microscope images of life science subjects. “Microscope images forge an extraordinary bond between science and art,” said Hidenao Tsuchiya, Olympus America’s Vice President and General Manager for the Scientific Equipment Group. “We founded this competition to focus on the fascinating stories coming out of today’s life science research laboratories. The thousands of images that people have shared with the competition over the years reflect some of the most exciting work going on in research today – work that can help shed light on the living universe and ultimately save lives. We look at BioScapes and these beautiful images as sources of education and inspiration to us and the world.”
