After a 10 month hiatus, it is time to focus on pattern, color, design and of course, a bit of whimsy now and then.

Yikes!!! It has been almost two months since my last post. My excuse…well, travel, working at and for the Co-Op and…procrastination!!!
As an amends, I found the perfect ‘back to work’ featured photo. It doesn’t get any better than ants, snakes, butterflies, lady bugs and beetles on silk organdy. It isn’t even Spring and I am already looking forward to Fall…at least the Pantone colors of Fall 2016. As you may know, I was not very excited by the Colors of 2016, Serenity & Rose Quartz.
From Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute: The desire for tranquility, strength, and optimism have inspired a Fall 2016 color palette that is led by the Blue family.
Along with anchoring earth tones, exuberant pops of vibrant colors also appear throughout the collections. Transcending gender, these unexpectedly vivacious colors in our Fall 2016 palette act as playful but structured departures from your more typical fall shades.
Blue skies represent constancy as they are always above us. Grays give a feeling of stability, Red tones invite confidence and warmth, while the hot Pinkish Purples and Spicy Mustard Yellows suggest a touch of the exotic.
My next project, translating these colors into the Kato color pallette.

The wait is over and the Pantone colors of 2016 are Serenity and Rose Quartz…YAWN!!! Since the last 20 years of my career was in interior design, I am seeing nursery decor, or onesies in Serenity and possibly party dresses up to age 6…beyond that…NOT SO MUCH!!!
From the Pantone Executive Director “Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.”
As you look over Pantone’s color of the year for the last 6 years you will see several colors that have ‘legs’ and some that fall flat. While my favorite color palette includes the rusts, golds and neutrals of the Fall, Radiant Orchid through Turquoise find a way into my Spring and Summer designs. (My daughter’s burgundy school uniform definitely influenced my decision to avoid Marsala) Let’s talk next year about Serenity & Rose Quartz…I would love to know how they have influenced your designs…or not!!!

In a recent Elle magazine, there were pages and pages of trends. The trend that caught my eye was entitled Board Games and the page was covered with models wearing checkerboard patterned clothing. While, all were interesting the Emilio Pucci ‘Op Art’ boots and tunic dominated the page.

Irish artist, Angela O’Kelly, combines nontraditional jewelry materials…paper & fabric…with precious metals to create bold, layered pieces. “I’m attracted to clashing colours in nature” she says. Texture is really important in her work. Boglands and the seaside rock formations inspire lightweight materials that don’t weigh the wearer down. “My designs are not for the everyday”, she explains. “More occasion wear than day wear, each design is a decorative object in its own right that you can admire as an art object when you’re not wearing it.”

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal suggested you Say It With Flowers. Needless to say, this timely sentiment was expressed shortly before Valentine’s Day. The most interesting item in the accompanying photo was the Roger Vivier handbag, featuring a beautiful spare pattern of budding flowers on a delicate pink background. My mind immediately jumped past February to a warm, sunny spring day with the scent of flowers in the air. It won’t be long now!!!

Anyone who works in polymer appreciates the genius of Judith Skinner’s technique of blending colors seamlessly across the surface. According to the fashion world, the ‘watercolor gradient adds a painterly finish to the season’s coolest staples.’ The fashion magazines are filled with ombre designs from head to toes…hair to shoes. Two examples are the shimmering rainbow evening bag from Roger Vivier (a limited edition of 50 and at $4050…perfect for any holiday occasion) and the subtle shading of the long gown from the Emilio Pucci’s (a definite departure from his typical pop art prints.)

I found myself at a loss for words to describe the fashion world of Valentino. Although he retired from the day to day operations of the Valentino brand, the jaw dropping designs continue to walk the runway. I will let the images of the chevron design that caught my eye in the latest Elle and the Spring/Summer 2015 runway show do the talking. Israel’s Hagar Arnon Elbaz has aptly named her Etsy shop Gilgulim…or reincarnation. Her work includes as many recycled, reused or second had materials as possible.
“My love for textile, buttons, beads, lace and ribbons goes back very far to the time when I was a little girl visiting my grandma’s house. My grandma had a room full of cupboards of all sizes and colors in which she piled her treasures that had come all the way from Germany back in 1939. It included fur coats, stray keys, strings, mother of pearl and crystal buttons from her father’s shop, lace along with cotton night gowns and linen she had received for her wedding. This room was my paradise. When I grew up I followed my love and became a textile designer.”
