Polymer’s great Aunt…Bakelite never shows ‘her’ age!!! The 2012 spring runway shows were full of Bakelite bangles covering arms from wrist to elbow. The large cuff is hot…hot…hot this year and there is no better source for inspiration than the google images of Bakelite.

It is a little disconcerting when styles you have worn are now considered…vintage. YIKES!!! Bakelite, lucite, resin, polymer what a interesting history they have written. Circa Sixty Three is bringing back history with its handmade jewelry constructed from 60’s & 70’s salvaged lucite. Be sure to check out the bangle page…groovy!!!

Alexis Bittar was featured in an post earlier this year. There is an interesting biographical time line on his site. In 1990 he designed a lucite jewelry line inspired by the Bakelite jewelry of the 1930’s. Wonder who has my grandmother’s Bakelite jewelry? Love all of the lucite pieces.

The history of polymer clay goes back to Bakelite. If I had only saved my grandmother’s Bakelite jewelry & buttons. Mark Davis is a jeweler who works with vintage bakelite. His work has a current look so I’m not sure how he defines vintage. Whatever he does…I like it!!!
Since his website is under construction the bracelet featured here is from Barney’s New York.
