One of my mother’s many artistic passions was weaving. Her workroom contained looms, knitting machines, oil paints and computers. I am carrying on her traditions. My studio is filled with paints, clay, metal supplies and a sewing machine. In the latest Ornament an article about weaving heritage the Chilkat Blanket designs caught my eye.
“Chilkat weaving is a traditional form of weaving practiced by Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, and other Northwest coastal tribes of Alaska and British Columbia. Chilkat blankets are worn by high-ranking tribal members on civic or ceremonial occasions, including dances.”
The simple geometrics of of this type of weaving combine to make a complex pattern. This appeals to the cane challenged side of my clay skills…great design elements!!!
Tradition is how we keep loved ones memories alive. Bravo!
This is so powerful and beautiful! I have to ask, do you make these to sell?
Unfortunately, I am not a weaver. I featured this traditional weaving technique because it is so beautiful and some of the design motifs can be translated into other mediums.
